The Artist
About
A contemporary Egyptian painter working between myth and the everyday.
Born in Ismailia and shaped by the Pharaonic monuments and Coptic monasteries around him, Reda Abdelrahman has become one of Egypt's leading contemporary artists.
Having studied at the University of Minya at the College of Fine Arts, being surrounded by outstanding Pharaonic monuments and Coptic monasteries left a lasting impression on his work.
His artistic focus centres on the connections between ancient Egyptian heritage and modern life, with a recurring emphasis on agriculture and the Nile Valley as sources of well-being and happiness.
Unlike much of contemporary Arab art, Reda has been seen as ground-breaking in that he draws and presents the female figure in his pictures, believing profoundly that women are central to the well-being of the family.
His work blends Pharaonic and decorative elements with hieroglyphic reference. He has created numerous mosaics throughout Egyptian cities and produces large-scale canvases and murals, with recent work emphasising the Egyptian Revolution following January 2011.
Beyond his prolific international career, Reda has promoted the Egyptian art scene through the Luxor Painting Symposium, the Aswan Sculpture Symposium and Fustat workshops. He founded Portrait magazine and curated a Cairo gallery, and as a founding artist in CARAVAN he seeks to use the arts to build bridges between East and West, and between their creeds and cultures.
